This illustration is based on an article in the New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/23/us/ramsey-street-rapist-dna.html#click=https://t.co/WKBuIRhH4w The Ramsey Street rapist had eluded police in Fayetteville, NC for more than a decade. To crack this cold case the police finally decided to try a new tactic. They mined DNA data from online genealogy databases to successfully locate and arrest a criminal suspect. Earlier this year in April 2018, police in California used the same method to track down the notorious Golden State Killer. Does this represent the future of forensic work in criminal investigations?
